The person authorizing the other to act is the principal, grantor or donor (of the power of attorney). The person authorized to act is the agent, attorney-in-fact, or in some common law jurisdictions, the attorney-in-fact.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, the term \"power of attorney\" referred to a document signed under seal, while a \"letter\" was a present document, meaning that it was simply signed by the parties, but today a power of attorney does not have to be signed under seal.
